It’s been raining a lot lately, which is surprising for us since Colorado usually doesn’t get too much precipitation. Our window shades and blinds at Total Window Coverings are designed to withstand everyday use, but exposure to excess moisture from rain or spills can cause damage if not properly dried. Whether your shades got wet due to an open window during a storm or an accidental spill, in this article we’ll cover how to dry them quickly and prevent issues like warping, mold, or discoloration.

How to Dry Wet Shades and Blinds

Remove Excess Water Immediately

  • Blot with a Dry Cloth – Gently press a microfiber or cotton cloth onto the wet areas to absorb as much moisture as possible.
  • Shake Off Excess Water – If your shades or blinds are removable, take them down and shake off any standing water.

Increase Air Circulation

  • Open Windows or Use Fans – Proper airflow helps speed up the drying process.
  • Turn on a Dehumidifier – This prevents moisture buildup and reduces the risk of mold or mildew.

Dry Based on Material Type

Fabric Shades (Sheer, Roman, Cellular, Roller Shades)

  • Pat Dry with a Towel – Absorb excess water without rubbing.
  • Lay Flat to Air Dry – If removable, lay them on a dry towel in a well-ventilated space.
  • Use a Hairdryer on Low Heat – Hold it several inches away to avoid damaging delicate fabric.

Wood and Faux Wood Blinds

  • Wipe Dry Immediately – Use a soft, dry cloth to prevent water damage.
  • Avoid Direct Sunlight – Let them dry indoors to prevent warping or cracking.
  • Use a Fan or Low-Heat Setting on a Hairdryer – This speeds up drying without damaging the material.

Vinyl and Aluminum Blinds

  • Wipe with a Dry Towel – Remove excess moisture quickly.
  • Hang to Dry – If possible, remove them and hang them in a dry area with good airflow.

Prevent Future Water Damage

  • Keep Windows Closed During Rain – Especially if your blinds or shades are near open windows.
  • Use Water-Resistant Window Coverings – Faux wood or vinyl blinds handle moisture better in humid areas.
  • Regularly Check for Mold – If shades have been damp for a long time, inspect them for mildew and clean as needed.

Spring rain doesn’t have to be your enemy. Of course, we urge you to prevent your shades and blinds from getting wet in the first place, but we understand that accidents happen. By acting quickly and drying your shades and blinds properly, you can prevent permanent damage and keep them looking great for years to come!
